DOT has transmitted to Congress the 2011-2015 National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS), which identifies 3,332 existing and 48 proposed airports that are significant to national air transportation, reports aviationnews.net.
Airports included in the NPIAS are eligible to receive AIP grants. The report estimates that, over the next five years, $52.2 billion of AIP-eligible infrastructure development will be needed for all segments of civil aviation. Further, the cost estimates of airport development included in this report are 5 percent higher than the preceding report (2009-2013), which was issued in 2008.
